Before we look at the website side, a little talk on files (pictures) for the internet.
These days we take many pictures with phones or digital cameras at very high resolution, much higher than can be put on a screen. Below is screen grabs of my 24" monitor running Microsoft Paint on the left the actual picture size my phone took, on the right same picture at 20% size. This has in turn been resized down to put on this page! The ideal size is one that ALMOST fills an average screen in paint. This should be cropped nicely to frame the subject, and importantly renamed sensibly (this picture was called 202111009_160910.jpg by my phone) which isn't helpful when looking for a picture!
A good website will have files about the size they are intended to display though you can resize the file on screen it slows down the website and increases the network traffic required to display it. So as said above editing your files before uploading them is the key to success.
I recommend that you keep on your computer a directory structure for the pictures you want to put on the website, so your pictures are organised. Then resize / crop / rename on your computer before thinking of uploading them to the internet. Windows has Photos and Paint installed by default Paint is easiest to resize pictures photo's has the better picture editor. Mac or IOS also have free photo editing software. You can of course get creative with more advanced software e.g. Adobe Photoshop but it isn't needed just well framed well lit photos.
